We spoke with the team at Sugatsune UK to learn more about their products, their growing presence in the shopfitting industry, and what NAS Members can expect from this new partnership.
What does Sugatsune UK do, and what sets you apart?
Sugatsune UK Ltd is the UK commercial office of Sugatsune Kogyo, a Japanese manufacturer of architectural and industrial hardware. We specialise in components like hinges, slides, locks, stays, catches, latches, pulls, and handles—essential parts that enable and control motion in furniture and fittings.
What sets us apart is the quality and attention to detail that goes into every product. Our design philosophy is rooted in Japanese engineering traditions—balancing functionality with elegance, and constantly innovating to solve real-world problems.
Why did you decide to join the NAS?
The retail and commercial interiors sector has become one of our most important markets. We’ve developed many specialist solutions for shopfitters, some of which have been huge successes in Japan.
Joining the NAS gives us the opportunity to work more closely with UK shopfitters, offering them access to innovative, high-performance hardware and helping them meet the specific challenges of the fit-out environment.
Can you give us some examples of products that are popular with shopfitters?
One standout solution is our GS-G Series for glass display installations. It offers everything you need—from hinges to locks—designed to create a seamless, elegant finish. Chrome, gold, and black finishes give a consistent aesthetic, and the slimline profiles keep everything flush to the surface.
It’s also very installer-friendly. For instance, you can hang a cabinet door with just one person—just clip the hinge onto the bracket, adjust with a screw and washer, and you’re done.
The GS-G Series also includes Total Lock options—so one key can operate multiple locks (from wood cabinet locks to glass or metal cabinet locks), which is ideal for retail environments that need to balance security with quick access.
Are there any other solutions shopfitters might find useful?
Absolutely. Our counter flap, LAD stays range with soft close, lift assist, and free stop mechanisms are very popular. We’ve developed our own patented Lapcon rotary dampers, which provide precise, adjustable soft-close control for both light and heavy flaps.
This helps prevent injury or damage from slamming lids—something shopfitters and their clients care deeply about. We also have retrofit options that allow you to add soft close to existing hinges, and free stop mechanisms that hold flaps in any open position.
What are you looking forward to as a member of the NAS?
We’re excited to build stronger relationships with shopfitters, interior contractors, and designers across the UK. Our goal is to make high-quality Japanese componentry more accessible and provide support on everything from product selection to installation.
